I got my start playing D&D with Bioware’s Neverwinter Nights. I don’t think I’ve ever played more than two hours of the campaign content, and I spent basically all my time playing in RP servers and living out childhood fantasies of being a wizard casting spells and fighting dragons. I got the bright idea to run a home game with some friends I made in high school, and I stumbled my way through D&D 3.5e for a little while before we switched DMs and played the newly released 4th Edition.
From there I continued playing intermittently throughout my time in school, and I discovered the OSR sometime in early university. I tore through the myriad blogs of that bygone era and couldn’t get enough. Unfortunately, I still lacked experience, and I found my infrequent attempts at spinning up a home game falter as I struggled to internalize the different pieces of advice and lessons I so thoroughly loved to read.
I’m still learning and growing as a GM, but I decided it was time to start an attempt at blogging in order to document my successes, my failures, and what I’ve learned as I continue to try to run games that my players will find enjoyable. Here’s hoping these musings will help others out there find their sea-legs in this vast hobby too.
